In our valley of Viñales we always find new things and adventures to explore! This time I’d like to tell you about the natural lake of Viñales, which is located right at the heart of the valley in between the ‘mogotes’ (mountains).
The lake is with fresh water and around it there are many plantations that are maintained every year by the local farmers, which grow for example coffee, tobacco, pineapple, banana and sugar cane. The lake is one of the places that we visit during the horseback riding excursion with our guide Juan José, to make the tour more fun and interesting.
It is good to know that the lake is not always there for you to enjoy; it usually dries up during the dry season in Viñales. In the months of July, August, September and October it usually rains more in Viñales and during these months the lake will be nice and full of water. After October, for some more time there is water in the lake, but then it the level of the water will go down. If there is enough water, of course we include a free visit to the lake on our horseback riding tour.
Next to the lake you can drink some typical drinks from the Valley of Viñales, such as a mojito, a coco loco, canchánchara or soda. There is a nice restaurant with views on the mountains, where a typical Cuban lunch is sold and you can also get some simple snacks.
And of course it is possible to cool off in the lake and wash away the 30 degrees of heat from your body. So, don’t forget to bring your bathing suit during the horseback riding excursion…
