Half a day is perfect for making a trip by bicycle to the Mural de la Prehistoria. Mainly for the views of the countryside and the feeling of being in the nature and between the animals of the ‘campo’ than you will see along this route. The Mural de la Prehistoria is located at only 3 kilometers from the town of Viñales and the entrance fee is 3 CUC per person. This route takes you along the road where I was born, and where my family still lives; when I go back to Cuba it is where I kick off my shoes and walk around barefoot like in earlier days 😉
The name of the Mural de la Prehistoria comes from the big painting of prehistoric animals on the face of the cliff. There have been painted in very bright colors on one of the highest ‘mogotes’ (typical mountains of Pinar del Río province) in the area. The mural has been made in 1961. The best part of coming to the Mural de la Prehistoria is that you can enjoy some of the best piña coladas in Viñales, that are sold at the little kiosk at the mural!
The trip to the Mural de la Prehistoria will take you about 1,5 hours by bike. To get here, you have to pass between two big ‘mogotes’ that provide a perfect setting for the painting. The best time to go here would be in the afternoon, when the sun is starting to go down a bit and the sky turns into bright colors like orange and pink. Don’t forget your camera: you will want to take some beautiful pictures for sure, as memories of this town.
